Enugu govt confirms cholera outbreak, urges vigilance among residents

The Enugu State Ministry of Health, on Monday, confirmed that the recent nationwide Cholera outbreak has affected the state.

This is contained in a statement signed by Prof Emmanuel Obi, Commissioner for Health, Enugu State.

While urging residents to be cautious, Obi said, โ€œCholera is spread by contaminated food or water. It causes acute watery diarrhea, (watery stool), and if left untreated can lead to death within hours. Other symptoms may include, vomiting and abdominal cramps.

โ€œIn collaboration with its Partners, the Enugu State Ministry of Health has initiated all necessary steps to de-escalate the situation following the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) guidelines.โ€

He urged the public โ€œto be vigilant and adhere to the following preventive measures:

โ€œPractice good hand hygiene by washing hands regularly with soap and running water, or alternatively use hand sanitizers.

โ€œUse potable water from reliable sources.

โ€œIntensify safe practices of food handling and preparation hygiene.

โ€œUse gloves and face masks and be careful when caring for sick individuals.

โ€œReport immediately, any sudden case of watery diarrhea to the nearest healthcare facility.

โ€œThe Enugu State Ministry of Health is committed to informing on and safeguarding the health and well-being of our citizens.โ€
